Women's Basketball Bested by Southern Connecticut State in Meeting of Regionally-Ranked Squads

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team lost to Southern Connecticut State University, 77-65, on Wednesday in the Ross Sports Center in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple and Gold is eighth in the D2CSC East Region Poll while the Owls are fourth and also received votes toward the latest D2CSC national poll.

  • Saint Michael's held a 42-36 rebounding lead while the Owls owned a 32-28 scoring advantage in the paint.
  • The Owls were 12-for-14 from the free throw line on the night, while the Purple Knights held a 34.6%-33.3% edge from three-point range.
  • The Purple and Gold had 28 points scored from the bench, including 12 points from non-starters in the fourth quarter.
THE ACTION
  • The Owls started the game on a 16-4 run led by six points from Williamson, who hit two shots from the charity stripe at 5:35 of the opening half to put her squad up by 12.
  • The two squads scored 10 points each in the final 4:20 of the first stanza, with Brophy scoring the final five points for the Purple Knights, including a corner three at 1:40 to make the score 24-14 before Haines knocked down two free throws at 1:15 for the final points of the quarter.
  • Furch scored from deep at 7:54 in the second quarter to close the Owls' lead down to seven points at 29-22 and cap an 8-3 run to start the quarter for Saint Michael's. Furch's three made the score 33-27 at 6:31.
  • The Owls finished the final 5:29 of the first half on a 12-2 run to make the score 45-29 heading into the locker rooms.
  • Southern Connecticut State had five different players score in the opening 5:31 of the third quarter for a 12-5 run and to make the score 57-34.
  • The Purple Knights started a 12-4 run on Montplaisir's three at 4:18 and capped off by Brianna Furch's jumper with 1:17 remaining in the third period, bringing the Purple Knights within 61-46, before the Owls scored the final four points of the third quarter.
  • Sophomore Amber Furch (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood School) and Montplaisir hit lay-ups to start the fourth quarter before Williamson made back-to-back jumpers, making it 69-50 for the Owls with 5:46 left in the game.
  • The Purple Knights never closed the gap to fewer than 12 points from there despite outscoring the Owls 15-8 in the final 5:36.
