Women's Swimming & Diving

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Both 5-1 After Victories at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded their first-semester dual schedule with a sweep of Norwich University on Sunday at Goodyear Pool. The women earned a 205-86 win, while the men were victorious by a 162-118 decision.

THE ACTION
  • Hart, McSweeney, Steen and Waldt won the opening 200-yard medley relay (1:59.43) before Hart and McSweeney joined Dzambo and Meade to take the closing 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.26).
  • Hart added wins in the 100- (1:12.53) and 200-yard (2:34.63) breaststrokes, with Dzambo second in the former and Meade second in the latter. McSweeney won the 50 free (25.92) and 100-yard backstroke (1:06.70), over runner-up Waranis in the 100 back. Waranis later won the 200 back (2:25.92).
  • Waldt captured the 500 (5:35.91) and 1,000 (11:34.83) free races, and Steen touched the wall first in the 100- (1:04.51) and 200-yard (2:33.89) butterfly events.
  • Walsh took the 200 free (2:06.40) and 200-yard individual medley (2:25.52), winning the latter over runner-up Steen. Dzambo was only 0.09 seconds outside of first place in the 100 free.
  • Junior Ashley Silveira (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) claimed second in both one-meter diving competitions, and first-year Shay Callanan (Shaftsbury, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) was runner-up in the 200 back and 1,000 free. Junior Riley Beaudoin (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable Regional) placed second in the 200 fly, and first-year Mary Mongelli (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) took second in the 100 fly.
MEN'S MEET
NOTES
  • Saint Michael's (5-1), Norwich (3-2)
  • The Purple Knights won consecutive meets over Norwich for the first time since sweeping a two-meet series during the 2009-10 school year, and took back-to-back wins in the Cadets' pool for the first time since 2008-09 and 2009-10.
  • Saint Michael's won despite claiming only seven events, employing its depth to earn 30 top-three finishes.

THE ACTION
  • Kowal won the 1,000 free (10:13.96) and 200 IM (2:03.45) while placing second in the 200 back and leading off for the runner-up 200 medley relay. He joined senior Will Englehardt (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), sophomore JJ Kane (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) and first-year Dylan Reichl (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) on the quartet.
  • Haynes took the 200 (1:48.70) and 500 (4:55.79) free races, and Revesz swept one-meter diving, scoring 150.70 points in the opener and 113.75 in the finale.
  • Thomas Kane won the 100 fly (54.59), placed second in the 50 free and 100 breast, and joined Englehardt, Haynes and JJ Kane on the second-place 200 free relay.
  • Englehardt added a second-place showing in the 100 free, junior Alex Meek (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was 100 back runner-up, and classmate Thorlief Prior (Luxembourg, Luxembourg/International School of Luxembourg) captured second in the 200 fly. Sophomore Cal Baird (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was second in the 1,000 free, and classmate Hunter Daily (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) placed second in the 200 breast.
