SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Brennan McFarland (Greeley, Colo./Northern Colorado Eagles) scored his second goal with 2:16 remaining to send the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team past Vermont State University Castleton, 2-1, during non-conference play on Tuesday in Cairns Arena. Junior Cole Manahan (Hermantown, Minn./Vernal Oilers) made a season-high 46 saves to shut down the Spartans.

THE ACTION

• The Spartans were unable to convert on two power plays in the first period, with Manahan making five saves with the Purple Knights down a skater, including a lunging glove save at 17:24. Manahan made 19 saves in the first period to keep the Spartans from scoring.
• The Purple Knights struck 4:23 into the second period when Douglas sent a breakout pass across ice to McFarland, who took a slapshot after letting the puck bounce off the boards and picked the top left corner. Lee added a secondary assist.
• Manahan made 12 saves in the remaining 15:37 of the second period following McFarland's tally to keep the lead for the Purple and Gold.
• Watson made six saves in the opening 2:07 of the third period to keep the Purple Knights from extending the lead.
• Manahan made a save on first-year Emmett McHardy's short-handed wrister at 13:28 to stop a 2-on-1 chance for the Spartans.
• The Spartans equalized 14 seconds after a penalty kill from the Purple Knights at 16:05 when Heaphy tapped in a loose puck in front of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
• McFarland scored his second goal and Saint Michael's retook the lead at 17:44 after Bloom stole the puck in the neutral zone and found McFarland on the right side of the net for the game-winner.
• The Spartans pulled Watson with 1:00 left in the third period for an extra skater, and sophomore Aiden Robson's shot that hit right pipe with 14 seconds left was the visitors' best chance in the final minute.
