Women's Basketball Downed by Regionally-Ranked Southern Connecticut State on Senior Day

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team lost to regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University, 60-41, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play in the Ross Sports Center. The Owls were tied for 10th in this week's D2CSC East Region poll.
 
The Purple Knights honored six seniors during a pregame ceremony: Makayla Blake (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), Anika Kapral (Dummerston, Vt./Vermont Academy), Kelly Laggis (Fairfield, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans), Jaxson Nadeau (Wakefield, Mass./Tilton School), Paige Slaven (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) and team manager Charli Cancroft (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth).

THE ACTION
  • The Owls began the first quarter by making two shots at the charity stripe, but the Purple Knights followed with an 11-0 run that began with three made shots from beyond the arc and was capped off by Slaven's jumper at 3:42.
  • Haines knocked down the Owls' first field goal at 2:35 from beyond the arc, and Williamson knocked down a jumper of her own with 57 seconds left to cut the host lead down to four at 11-7.
  • Slaven made a layup with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter to give the Purple and Gold a six-point lead at the end of the first stanza.
  • Southern Connecticut State began the second quarter with a 10-5 run in the beginning 4:52 of the quarter, culminated by a Bonilla three-pointer to bring the visitors within one at 18-17.
  • Slaven hit back-to-back jumpers for the Purple Knights to help spark a 7-3 run to create space from the Owls, finished off by Blake's made field goal at 1:17 to make the score 25-20.
  • The Owls scored five points in the final minute of the half, capped off by Fox's three with eight seconds let to tie the game at 25 heading into halftime.   
  • Neither team led by more than two points in the first six minutes of the third quarter, until the Owls went on a 7-0 run to lead by six at 2:46 on Steinauer's jumper to make the score 36-30 in favor of the visitors.
  • Brophy and Blake both knocked down shots to bring the Purple Knights within two, but Haines knocked down two shots at the foul line with 49 seconds left to extend the Owls' lead to 38-34.
  • The Owls scored 19 of the first 22 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.
