EAST BURKE, Vt. - Senior Simen Strand (Nedre Høvik, Norway/Dønski VGS) placed second in Saturday's slalom during day one of the Harvard University Carnival at Burke Mountain Resort, helping the Saint Michael's College Alpine men capture third in the event.
 
CARNIVAL FACTS

• The men placed third with 84 points, trailing only the University of New Hampshire (117) and Dartmouth College (120). They trimmed regional powers University of Vermont (75.5) and Middlebury College (69), which were fourth and fifth, respectively.
• With 129 points between the men and women, the Purple Knights are seventh after the first day of Alpine events, narrowly trailing Colby College (131) and Plymouth State University (132).
• The Purple Knights returned to the slopes for the first time since Jan. 20 after the most recent Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival events had been postponed.
• Between the Alpine and Nordic teams, Saint Michael's stands 10th among 14 schools with 300 points, within 11 of ninth-place Williams College.
