Women's Ice Hockey Bested in NEWHA Matchup by Sacred Heart, 1-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team lost to Sacred Heart University, 1-0, on Saturday during the second game of a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) weekend set in Martire Family Arena.

GAME FACTS
  • The Purple and Gold blocked 17 shots on the afternoon.
THE ACTION
  • Nevers netted the lone goal of the matchup at 14:52 of the first period on an assist from Lupone to give the Pioneers the lead.  
  • Junior Grace Canterbury (Eagle River, Alaska/Shattuck-Saint Mary's School) was able to fire off a shot on the power play with nine seconds remaining in the first period, but the attempt was saved by Greene.
  • Gyurko made 14 saves in the first period, while Greene only made seven.
  • The Pioneers were unable to convert on either of their power-play opportunities in the second period, and Gyurko made 13 saves to keep the Pioneers from extending the lead.
  • Gerebi and first-year Victoria FitzGibbon (Stittsville, Ontario/East Ottawa Junior Stars U22 AA) both took shots in the final 20 seconds of regulation, with the latter coming during a 6-on-5 advantage with Gyurko out of the net, but both opportunities were blocked by LaRoche.
