Baseball Swept in Non-League Doubleheader by Regionally-Ranked Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team lost a non-league twinbill with Franklin Pierce University, 5-3 and 9-6, in a pair of seven-inning contests on Friday at Pappas Field. The Ravens were ninth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region poll.

  • After swiping three bases during the doubleheader today, senior Andrew Lanthier (Orwell, Vt./Fair Haven Union) is second in program history for career stolen bases with 34, passing Tyler Wild '14 (32). He is two shy of Brian Rayder's '93 31-year-old program mark (36).
  • Sophomore Seth Larson (Leicester, Mass./Leicester) recorded his first career hit in game two of the doubleheader.

THE ACTION
  • The Ravens scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Staubley brought in Lugo on a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • The Purple Knights tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Arsenault legged out a triple to the right center gap to score Tetta from first base. 
  • Burke escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning with his third strikeout of the frame for the final out to keep the game tied.
  • Tetta gave the Purple and Gold the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run single that scored Gilboy and junior Evan Balian (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) to make the score 3-1.
  • The Ravens cut the lead to 3-2 when graduate student Eli Battipaglia scored on a throwing error in the home half and took the lead when Lugo plated two runs on a three-base error with two down.
  • Rivera shut down the Purple Knights in the final two innings of the game, striking out five of the six batters he faced.

THE ACTION
  • Kolifrath drove in the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning on an opposite-field two-run home run that gave the Purple and Gold a 2-0 lead.
  • Lugo cut the visitors' lead in half in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to left field. DeAndrade followed with a double to left field that drove in Lugo to tie the game at two.
  • The Purple Knights scored four runs in the top of the second inning, as Arsenault plated Santos, Lanthier drove in two on a single to right field, and Gilboy walked with the bases loaded to bring Lanthier home to score and make the score 6-2.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Lugo drove in two on a double to cut the Purple Knights' lead to 6-4.
  • The Ravens scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, with redshirt first-year Vincent Eramo hitting an RBI double, Roberti knocking a two-run home run, and Ian Battipaglia singling to center to drive in Staubley.
  • Lugo single to center in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Ian Battipaglia and give the Ravens a 9-6 lead.
  • The Purple Knights were able to get two men on base in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't shorten the hosts' lead.
