Baseball Splits Midweek NE10 Doubleheader at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Assumption University, losing game one 9-8 and securing a 7-4 victory in the nightcap, on Wednesday at H.L. Rocheleau Field.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Sophomore Colin Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) picked up his first career save in game two of the doubleheader, helping the Purple Knights tie a six-year-old program record with six saves this spring. Five different players have at least one save.
  • The Purple Knights hit three home runs between the two games and, with 15 this year, are three short of a 27-year-old program record.
  • The Saint Michael's pitching staff struck out 18 batters total, retiring nine batters by way of the K in each game.

THE ACTION
  • Kolifrath tripled in the top of the first inning with two outs to bring Evan Balian around to score all the way from first to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead.
  • Arsenault doubled with two outs in the top of the second inning and advanced all the way to home after defensive miscues in the outfield to double the Purple Knights' lead.
  • Cavossa launched his first home run of the year to right field in the top of the third inning to give the Purple and Gold a 3-0 lead.
  • The Greyhounds scored three runs to tie the game in the home half, capped off by Barry's double to center field that plated Smith with two down.
  • Sean Moynihan homered for Assumption in the fourth inning to give the Greyhounds their first lead of the afternoon, 5-3.
  • The Purple Knights exploded for a five-run sixth inning when first-year Richard Gilboy's (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) grounder plated Evan Balian, and Kinsella, Arsenault, and Terence Moynihan all contributed run-scoring singles to make the score 8-5. Moynihan's knock down in a pair.
  • Holbrook cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the sixth on his solo home run to right field.

THE ACTION
  • Gilboy's groundout scored Kolifrath, who had led off with a walk, for the opening run in the second inning.
  • Assumption tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Podolec singled to left center to score Sean Moynihan from second with two out.
  • Cavossa gave the Purple and Gold the lead on his two-out single to right field that scored Sevigny from second to make the score 2-1 in the third.
  • The Purple Knights added two more runs when Kolifrath and Gilboy hit back-to-back solo shots to lead off the top of the fourth inning.
  • Kolifrath drove in another run for the visitors in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out double down the left field line that scored Sevigny to give the Purple Knights a 5-1 lead.
  • The Greyhounds scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, with Barry hitting a solo home run, Holbrook adding an RBI triple, and Howland laying down a safety squeeze to make the score 5-4.
  • Cavossa doubled to right field in the top of the ninth inning to drive in two runs with two out and give the Purple Knights a 7-4 lead.
  • Burke worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to secure the win for the Purple and Gold.
