Schramm's Strike Sends Men's Soccer Past Regionally-Ranked New Haven, 1-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Amos Schramm (Sagard, Mecklenburg-Pomerania, Germany/Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium) struck for the lone goal in the 49th minute to lift the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team past regionally-ranked University of New Haven, 1-0, on Saturday during each team's Northeast-10 Conference opener in Kathy Zolad Stadium. At 4-1-1, the Purple Knights are off to their best start in 10 years. The Chargers were seventh in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.

THE ACTION
  • The teams combined for six shots in the first half, with only one sent on net, graduate student Albert Porqueras' 17th-minute drive from the left side of the box that Smith secured.
  • In the 49th minute, sophomore Ronnie Riby-Williams (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) collected a loose ball in the midfield before sending Cisse up the right sideline, where both got touches before a deflected ball found Schramm, who sent a one-touch from the top of the box inside the left box and beyond a diving Watts.
  • Smith kept his team in front in the 58th minute, sprawling to deny junior Kaanturk Akgul's diving header from out front. Akgul drilled the crossbar in the 69th minute off of a free kick.
  • Smith maintained the lead by catching graduate student Anthony Denis' bouncing header following a corner kick in the 86th minute for what proved to be the game's final shot.
