THE ACTION
- Manahan turned away all eight shots he faced during a scoreless first period.
- The netminder made back-to-back stops around 3:29 of the second frame before the Purple Knights broke through near the midway point of the stanza.
- After Manahan denied first-year Garrett McCabe's wrister from the slot, Last picked up the rebound and slid a pass into the neutral zone for Ciancio, who made one move at the blue line to gain the Bear zone before picking Perno's blocker corner from the right circle with 9:26 gone.
- Manahan stopped the Bears' first 39 shots before Mahlmeister tied the game at 14:41 of the third period, taking a giveaway in the right circle before deking his way past the goalie to finish up close.
- Saint Michael's earned a power play that began at 16:05, but all three shots off the stick of Ciancio during a 52-second span of the man advantage were saved by Perno.
- Manahan dropped his blocker to turn away sophomore Jakub Hall's rush to the net with 14 seconds to go, and the teams headed to overtime.
- In the 3-on-3 extra session, Last rushed to the net a little more than two minutes in but had a bid saved, and sophomore Hans Forselius' (Guilford, Conn./Seahawks Hockey Club) backhanded follow-up attempt was stopped. That proved to be the best chance for either team in overtime, as the visitors took all five shots, securing a tie for both squads.
- After both goalies stopped first-round shots in the shootout, senior Jack Bavis (West Roxbury, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) scored for the Purple Knights, only to be met by first-year Owen Watson. Saint Michael's missed its third try, giving SUNY Potsdam a chance to win with a goal, but Manahan saved the hosts' ensuing attempt. Both goalies again made stops in the sudden-victory fourth round before senior Ryland Dukes (Nashville, Tenn./Walpole Express) scored in the fifth round to give Saint Michael's a 2-1 edge. The final SUNY Potsdam shooter sent a bid wide, allowing the Purple and Gold to win the shootout.
