16-0 Surge Pushes Men's Basketball Past Southern New Hampshire, 78-71

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A 16-0 second-half run pushed the Saint Michael's College men's basketball team in front to stay during a 78-71 victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday evening in the Ross Sports Center. The Northeast 10 Conference foes met for a non-league affair.

THE ACTION
  • Neither team held a lead of more than two possessions until Floyd converted a fastbreak lay-up at 4:12 of the first half (34-27), and Kenney's driving lay-up on the other side of a media timeout made it 36-27 with 3:18 to go. The Purple Knights led 38-31 at halftime.
  • Three Penmen scored during a 7-0 run that provided the visitors with a 48-46 edge at 12:40 of the second frame, and Southern New Hampshire was up 52-49 on Wallace's basket at 11:46.
  • Saint Michael's responded with the next 16 points over a 2:50 span thanks to scoring from four players. De Leon and redshirt first-year Mac Kelly (Mineola, N.Y./Hun School of Princeton/Colorado Christian) both scored five points, with De Leon netting the final five to give his team a 65-52 lead with 8:40 left.
  • Wallace later scored six points in a 9-2 run that brought the Penmen within 69-65 at 2:35, and redshirt junior Jack Hall's triple made it 71-68 with 1:51 left.
  • With his team still up just three, Floyd buried a three-pointer at 52.2 seconds that doubled the lead before picking up a steal near center court on the next possession. De Leon converted a pair of free throws at 39 seconds, and the Purple Knights never again led by fewer than six points.
