No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Downed by No. 1 LIU in Postseason Opener

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The eight-seeded Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team lost to No. 1 Long Island University, 4-0, on Friday afternoon during game one of a three-game New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Championship quarterfinal series in Northwell Health Ice Center.

THE ACTION
  • The Sharks scored the first goal of the contest at 12:36 in the first period on a power play off the stick of Morrow for an unassisted tally to make it 1-0.
  • Wildfong doubled the hosts' lead at 13:43 on a wrist shot that picked the top left corner after skating up the left side of the ice to put LIU up 2-0.
  • The Sharks doubled the lead in the second period with two goals 1:42 apart at 12:34 and 14:16, scored by Wallner and Rourke, to make it 4-0.  
  • First-year Jodie Gratton (Saint Albans, Vt./Proctor Academy) had back-to-back opportunities at 16:45 in the second period, but both were saved by Thompson to keep the Purple Knights off the scoreboard.
  • DeMarinis made 12 saves in the third period to keep the Sharks from adding to their lead, but the visitors were unable to trim their deficit.
