Gilboy Launches Walk-Off Home Run in Opener of Baseball’s Split Against Assumption

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Richard Gilboy (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Saint Michael's College baseball team to a 5-3 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Assumption University in the opener of a doubleheader on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Greyhounds took the non-conference nightcap, 14-5 in seven innings.

THE ACTION
  • Cavossa led off the bottom of the first inning with a single down the left field line. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before being brought home by senior Evan Balian (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) on an RBI groundout to the first baseman.
  • Gilboy laced a two-out single up the middle to score Kinsella in the bottom of the second inning and give the Purple and Gold a 2-0 lead.
  • The Purple Knight pitching staff was aided by two stellar defensive to keep the Greyhounds from scoring. Sophomore second baseman Trevor Arsenault (Websterville, Vt./Spaulding) made a diving stop in the hole between first base and second with two outs to stop a run from scoring in the top of the fifth inning. Kinsella followed with a diving catch near the warning track in left field to end the top of the sixth inning and strand two runners on base.
  • Assumption scored the next run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Podolec singled through the right side to drive in Manzo, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
  • The hosts responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Gilboy drove in Kinsella with a two-out RBI single down the right field line to make it 3-1.
  • The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. First-year James McDermott drove in sophomore Jamison Howland on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 3-2 and Lefrancois followed two batters later with a single to left field to score senior Matthew Holbrook and tie the game at 3-3.
  • Gilboy launched a two-run home run to right-center field after junior Jack Weber (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame) reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and win the game for the Purple Knights.

THE ACTION
  • Assumption scored three unearned runs in the top of the second inning on three singles up the middle to take a 3-0 lead.
  • The Purple Knights responded in the home half of the inning with Rogers and Jalbert both collecting RBI on base hits and first-year Steven Klein (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) driving in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-3. Jalbert scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.
  • Podolec singled through the left side with two outs in the top of the third inning to drive in two unearned runs and give the Greyhounds a 5-4 lead.
  • Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two down in the home half of the inning to tie the game.
  • The Greyhounds plated the eventual winning run on a passed ball in the fourth inning, scoring five in that frame and four runs in the top half of the seventh to pull away and earn the split.
