Cavossa Knocks 100th Hit, Baseball Swept by Regionally-Ranked Southern New Hampshire

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Junior Sam Cavossa (East Falmouth, Mass./The Winchendon School) picked up his 100th career hit as the Saint Michael's College baseball team was swept by regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 20-6 and 19-7, during a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Penmen were ranked fourth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region poll.

THE ACTION
  • The Penmen scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a sac fly before Wachter's two-out RBI single made it 3-0 in the second.
  • Valera's two-run double sparked a four-run third, as the visitors scored in each of the first five innings to pull away.
  • Saint Michael's scored six runs on four hits in the ninth, as Gilboy, first-year Jerry Guzman (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Brunswick School) and Jalbert knocked RBI singles.

THE ACTION
  • Burke and Brassill were locked up in a scoreless pitcher's duel until redshirt sophomore Ruben Fernandez's short grounder scored Pisano in the fourth inning.
  • Cavossa's RBI single in the sixth inning kicked off a four-run frame. Senior Evan Balian (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) was plunked with the bases loaded before Gilboy doubled with two out to score two runs.
  • The Penmen immediately responded with six runs on two hits in the seventh, keyed by Fernandez's two-run single. The visitors scored twice in eighth and 10 more times in the ninth.
  • Weber and Cavossa both picked up RBI singles in a three-run home half of the ninth.
