Baseball Swept by Nationally-Regarded Franklin Pierce

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by nationally-regarded Franklin Pierce University, 23-6 and 8-7 in seven innings, on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field. The first contest was a Northeast-10 Conference affair. The Ravens received votes toward this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) national poll.

THE ACTION
  • Balian's two-out RBI single scored Kolifrath with the game's first run in the opening frame.
  • An eventful third inning featured five Franklin Pierce runs, keyed by Boyd's two-out, three-run home run, and three by Saint Michael's. All three were unearned, and Kinsella's two-out RBI single cut the deficit to 5-4.
  • A pair of run-scoring hits and an error brought around three Ravens in the fourth before Kolifrath's bases-loaded blast to the fence narrowly missed tying the game but plated a run to make it 8-5.
  • The visitors scored 15 of the game's final 16 runs, sparked by Lugo's three-run home run to straightaway center field in the fifth.

THE ACTION
  • Hewlette's ground-rule double with two down in the first inning scored Lugo, but Caldon did not allow another hit until two were away in the fifth.
  • In the meantime, Jalbert led off the home half of the first with a home run before the Purple Knights scored four runs on four hits in the following frame. Jalbert walked with the bases packed to force in the initial run, Smith singled home Rogers, and Santos came through with a two-run single up the middle to make it 5-1.
  • With Caldon cruising with a one-hitter and two down in the fifth, six straight Ravens reached base, with Hewlette knocking a two-run double down the left-field line before three runs scored between two errors and a wild pitch. The five-run frame gave the visitors a 6-5 lead.
  • The Purple Knights immediately rallied in the home half, with Hewett scoring the tying run on an error and Rogers plating the go-ahead run on Jalbert's groundout.
  • Monks scored the tying run on a groundout in the sixth inning.
  • In the seventh, first-year Jacob Roque's sinking two-out single dropped into center field to score the eventual winning run.
  • DeLucia entered to set down the Purple and Gold in order in the home half.
