Men's Tennis Loses 4-3 Decision at Southern New Hampshire

HOOKSETT, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost a 4-3 decision to Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at the Mark A. Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

  • Barroso upped his career win total to 63 between singles and doubles, within five of former teammate Jason Boucher's '23 program record (68). His 31 singles wins are three shy of Ben Wynn's '94 mark.
  • Four of the Purple Knights' six losses have come by a slim 4-3 margin this school year.
THE ACTION
  • Effler and Macpherson opened the match by securing a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, as the tandem improved to 5-1 in NE10 play.
  • However, Brooker and senior Jackson Moser (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) lost by a 6-4 count in the second spot before Barroso and graduate student Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) dropped a 6-3 decision in the top spot for their first loss in five NE10 outings. Southern New Hampshire carried the 1-0 lead into singles play.
  • Brooker evened the score with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, and Barroso again tied the match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the second spot.
  • Du Plessis narrowly lost his opening set in a 6-4, 6-2 loss at No. 1 that gave the Penmen a 3-2 edge, but van den Broek rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 win in the third spot to force the final tie of the contest. He is now 9-3 in singles this school year, including 5-1 in NE10 action.
  • With the match down to No. 4 singles and first-year Benji Hegedus-Kyster (Budapest, Hungary/British International School Budapest) making his debut playing that high in the lineup, he took his Penmen opponent to a pair of set tiebreakers before ultimately losing an epic 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) contest.
