Baseball Downed Twice at Nationally-Regarded Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team was swept by nationally-regarded Bentley University, 14-9 and 11-4, during a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday at Robert DeFelice Baseball Field. The Falcons, who earned votes toward a pair of national polls this week, were third in the latest NCAA East Region poll as the top-ranked NE10 squad in the standings.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS
  • Senior Evan Balian (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) moved into sixth in program history in career hits (130), passing Matt Beaulieu '10 (129).
  • Senior Max Kolifrath (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) blasted his 14th career home run, snapping a tie for second in program history with Balian to move within two of Trevor Allen's '19 school mark (16). Kolifrath now has 93 hits in three seasons and moved into a tie for sixth in walks (50) at Saint Michael's.
  • With 51 hits this season, junior Sam Cavossa (East Falmouth, Mass./The Winchendon School) is five short of Beaulieu's 16-year-old program record.
  • Senior Terence Moynihan (Stoneham, Mass./Saint Mary's) picked up his 137th career hit, taking over sole possession of second place in school annals. Alec Tice '14 holds the program record (146).

THE ACTION
  • Evan Balian's third-inning RBI single accounted for the game's first run before Kinsella scored on a two-out wild pitch.
  • Bentley countered with six runs on four hits and two errors in the home half, as Pappas tied the game with a two-run double before Berardino's two-run single put his team in front.
  • The Falcons added a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits to make it 8-2 in the fifth, and Pappas' two-run single capped a six-run eighth.
  • Down 12 runs in the ninth inning, Saint Michael's trimmed seven runs off of its deficit, with six coming home before a batter was retired. Moynihan came through with a two-run single. With two on and two out, the final batter popped out.

THE ACTION
  • Kolifrath unloaded a solo home run to left center with two out in the first inning before Moynihan's second-inning sac fly again had the Purple Knights up 2-0.
  • Sencaj and Pappas both knocked RBI singles during a go-ahead three-run second inning.
  • Six more runs came around on five hits and an error in the fourth, keyed by two-run singles from senior Stan DeMartinis III and Goonan.
  • Sophomore Dom Tetta (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Gilboy knocked two-out RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to draw Saint Michael's within 9-4.
  • Bentley got the runs back when Berardino scored on a seventh-inning wild pitch and Sencaj drilled an RBI triple in the eighth.
