Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Regionally-Ranked Men's Soccer Trimmed by No. 3 Southern New Hampshire, 1-0

HOOKSETT, N.H. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's soccer team yielded only a 15th-minute goal to nationally-ranked No. 3 Southern New Hampshire University during a 1-0 loss in Northeast 10 Conference play on Wednesday evening in Ouellette Stadium. The Purple Knights were 10th in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll, while the Penmen topped those rankings in additional to their national standing.

  • The hosts held advantages in shots (14-7) and corner kicks (4-0).
  • Southern New Hampshire, which ran its unbeaten streak to 14 games, had been limited to a single tally only twice in its prior nine contests - both by visiting Post University.
THE ACTION
  • Junior Alex Pons drifted a shot off the crossbar in the 10th minute before serving a cross over a charging Smith in the 15th minute, and Herrmann finished at the back post for the game's lone goal.
  • Smith made a sprawling save of Herrmann's header off of a free kick service in the 31st minute.
  • Junior Ronnie Riby-Williams (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) nearly found the equalizer in the 48th minute, heading on senior Drew Kull's (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) long free kick over Garcia, but a field player cleared the ball just as it neared the goal line.
  • Smith kept it 1-0 with a leaping save in the 56th minute before making another aerial stop in the 71st minute while under pressure from three crashing Penmen.
  • On a quick counter at the other end, sophomore Iago Lopez (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) drilled a low shot just outside the left post beyond a diving Garcia in the 74th minute for the Purple Knights' final good look.
