Two Late Strikes Rally Women's Soccer to 3-2 Win Over Millersville

MADISON, N.J. - Senior Bella DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and junior Bridget Hanley (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) both scored in the final 6:47 of regulation to rally the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team past Millersville University of Pennsylvania, 3-2, on Thursday during each team's season opener at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham's Robert T. Shields Field.

THE ACTION
  • In the 50th minute, Brookes picked up a loose ball near midfield and carried into the teeth of the Millersville defense before cutting back near the top of the box and putting a shot into the upper right corner for the opening strike.
  • In the 74th minute, Strohecker bodied down sophomore Livia Messenger's through ball to the top corner of the box and sent a slow shot just beyond Laizer's extended right foot into the lower left corner for the equalizer.
  • Just 7:13 later, Strohecker cleaned up a rebound at 80:32 after sophomore Nikki Tonello's one-touch shot hit the left post.
  • The Purple Knights tied the game less than three minutes later, as Gormley served a corner kick that Hanley headed off the turf and in with 83:13 gone.
  • DelVecchio lined up a free kick from 30 yards out and drilled the eventual game-winning goal off of a diving Moss' hand and into the right side at 85:03, only 1:50 after Hanley's tying goal.
  • Millersville was unable to create any additional tying opportunities.
