No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Loses NEWHA Quarterfinal Opener at No. 1 Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. - The eighth-seeded Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team opened a best-of-three New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Tournament quarterfinal series against No. 1 Franklin Pierce University with an 8-0 loss on Friday at The Winchendon School's Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

GAME FACTS
  • With 3,336 career saves, Lavender moved into 18th in NCAA National Collegiate (Division I/II) women's ice hockey history, passing Jada Brenon (3,312) of the College of the Holy Cross and Mercyhurst University and Kerrin Sperry (3,329) of Boston University. Lavender is 13 short of Northeastern University's Aerin Frankel (3,349), who won an Olympic gold medal for Team USA last week.
THE ACTION
  • The teams were knotted 9-9 in shots during the first period, as the Purple Knights spent nearly four consecutive minutes on the power play in the middle portion. The visitors had five bids in the first woman advantage, with Hertl denying the only shot that made it on net, before the netminder was forced into three saves across the second power play.
  • In between, Murphy scored a shorthanded goal with 12:50 gone, forcing a giveaway in the neutral zone before beating the final defender and sending a backhanded shot past Lavender from the doorstep. The 1-0 lead held through the first intermission.
  • Dean made it 2-0 at 5:58 of the second period when she put home a rebound, and Mariana Valeri added to the lead on a power play 1:43 later when Quinn blocked Broz's initial shot but the puck ricocheted to an open Valeri at the left post.
  • Franklin Pierce scored three times in a 3:56 span of the third period to lead 5-0 by 4:34, with two goals coming on power plays.
