Baseball Sets Program Record for Wins, Finishes Series Victory Over Franklin Pierce, 11-8

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team picked up its program-record 18th win with an 11-8 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday during Northeast 10 Conference play at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights won the four-game season series from the Ravens, 3-1.

  • The Purple Knights are 9-1 at home this season, their best showing since going 10-5 in 2009. Their .900 home winning percentage is second in the league only to 22nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, which is 13-1 at home (.929).
  • Saint Michael's won the regular-season series from the Ravens, 3-1, after entering the year 3-55-1 in the all-time series.
  • The Purple Knights broke a tie with the 1999 team for the program's wins record.

THE ACTION
  • Boyd's two-out, two-run double put the Ravens ahead in the first inning.
  • Cavossa socked a solo homer in the third, but an error gave Franklin Pierce the two-run lead back in the fourth, and the visitors were up 3-1.
  • Gilboy's go-ahead two-out, two-run double capped a four-run bottom half, but the Ravens countered with a three-run fifth to go back up 6-5. Boyd again provided a go-ahead two-run double with two down.
  • Graduate student Max Kolifrath (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) was plunked with the bases loaded to tie the game in the sixth, and sophomore Jerry Guzman (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Brunswick School) followed with a single to left field for a go-ahead RBI. Junior Colin Kinsella (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) added a sac fly to push the Purple Knights' lead to 8-6.
  • Boyd's sac fly knotted the teams in the top of the seventh, finishing a two-run frame.
  • In the home half, an infield error plated Weber and Pattison with what proved to be the winning runs, and Gilboy's RBI single back up the box pushed the lead to 11-8.
  • In the meantime, Burke retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, including fanning the side in the ninth inning.
