Baseball Caps Weekend Split of Regionally-Ranked Saint Anselm on Senior Day

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team finished off a weekend split of regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College by splitting a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights took the nightcap, 12-10, after losing 4-1 in seven innings in the opener. The Hawks were eighth in this week's NCAA East Region rankings.

As the No. 5 seed in the upcoming six-team NE10 Championship, the Purple and Gold visits No. 4 Adelphi University on Tuesday for a first-round game at 2 p.m. Saint Michael's has qualified for the postseason for the first time in program history.

The Purple Knights honored their 10 seniors as part of Senior Day: Colin Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan), Keegan Burke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan), Ryan Canty (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union), Sam Cavossa (East Falmouth, Mass./The Winchendon School), Jack Fischer (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep), Casey Gunnip (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Saint Rose), Braedon Jones (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union/UMass Dartmouth), Jacek Krol (Tolland, Conn./Tolland/Onondaga CC), Matt Safer (Essex, Vt./Essex) and Jack Weber (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame).

RECORDS
  • Saint Michael's (20-25, 18-18 NE10), Saint Anselm (23-21, 21-15 NE10)
DOUBLEHEADERS FACTS
  • Junior Jack Pattison (Vernon, Vt./Vermont Academy) was hit by three pitches in the nightcap, tying the program record for the second time this year, after only four Purple Knights had been plunked three times in a game prior to this season. Pattison and fellow Brattleboro Union High School alumni David Deyo '05 and Eric Libardoni '05 are the only Purple Knights ever hit three times in a home game.
  • During game two, Pattison pushed his season hit-by-pitch total to 20, breaking a tie with Lenin Gomez '20 (17 in 2019) for the school record. Pattison owns 28 plunks for his career, just one shy of graduate student Max Kolifrath's (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) program mark.
  • Junior Richard Gilboy (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) tied Kolifrath for first in program history with 91 RBI. By pushing his season walk total to 30, Gilboy surpassed Brian Rayder's '93 34-year-old program record of 28.
  • Colin Burke picked up his sixth career save, tying a school record shared by Rob McCarty '13 and sophomore Jerry Guzman (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Brunswick School).
  • The Purple Knights finished 11-3 at home, breaking the 2009 team's record for home victories (10).

THE ACTION
  • The teams combined for only five hits over four shutout innings to begin the game, with the Purple Knights leaving the bases loaded in the third for the greatest threat by either squad.
  • Junior Mavrick Bourdeau drove in the game's first run in the fifth when his potential inning-ending double-play grounder yielded only the second out, scoring Gonzalez from third.
  • Sophomore Gavin Rigney walked with the bases loaded and two down in the sixth to force home an unearned run, and Slauson knocked an RBI double in the seventh before scoring on Gonzalez's single with two down to make the score 4-0.
  • After the first two Purple Knights were retired in the home half, Arsenault, Pattison and Cavossa stroked consecutive singles, with Cavossa's scoring Arsenault, and Gilboy walked to load the bases. Bryant entered from the bullpen to retire the only batter he faced on a game-ending fly ball.

He added a sac fly in four-run third, when Weber socked an opposite-field two-run homer to right center.

  • Xavier Gonzalez's RBI single trimmed the deficit to 11-5 in the seventh before Bourdeau's two-run single keyed a four-run eighth that cut the margin to 11-9.
  • Pattison scored on junior Colin Kinsella's (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) popup to shallow left field for a key insurance run in the home half.
  • Saint Anselm loaded the bases with no one out in the ninth, but Burke fanned two of the final three batters, sandwiched around Bourdeau's sac fly.
