LIVERPOOL, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team played a handful of close sets but ultimately fell at Le Moyne College, 7-2, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play in Gold's Gym. The Purple Knights moved to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the league, while the Dolphins are 1-2 and 1-2.
During doubles play, sophomore Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and first-year Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) combined for an 8-6 victory in the third position, while the Purple Knights' two other tandems fell. Senior Nick Bosco (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) and first-year Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) had the closest losing decision, coming up shy by an 8-5 score.
In singles action, Lambert picked up a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory at No. 6, the first singles win of his career, while one teammate dropped a three-setter and two others had a narrow set loss. Sophomore Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) won his opening set in the fifth spot during a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 loss, and Bosco and senior Tom Brahm (Marlborough, Conn./Xavier) each absorbed a 6-4 setback in the second set at No. 1 and 2, respectively.
The Purple Knights complete the fall portion of their 2013-14 slate next Sunday at Bentley University at 1 p.m.
