Softball falls twice to regional power New Haven during NE-10 play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College softball team completed a four-game road weekend with a pair of setbacks at the University of New Haven on Sunday, 4-2 and 8-3, in Northeast-10 Conference play at the New Haven Softball Field. The Purple Knights are now 0-14 overall and 0-4 in the league, while the Chargers improved to 10-4 and 3-1. New Haven has qualified for four of the past five NCAA Tournaments.

Junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) went 2-for-4 with a run in the opener for Saint Michael's, while classmate Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) doubled in addition to picking up a run and an RBI. Sophomore Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) doubled home a run, while senior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) was 1-for-1 with a stolen base and two sacrifices. Frank also took the setback, yielding three earned runs in six innings.

First-year Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led New Haven with a 3-for-4 effort, adding two RBIs, while junior Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) and sophomore Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) each were 2-for-3. Senior Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City/Vernon) struck out four during a complete-game victory.

Falls and Murray knocked back-to-back RBI doubles with one out in the first inning before Stonesifer blanked the Purple Knights from there. Palase's RBI single in the home half made it 2-1, and Chamoff's two-out, run-scoring base hit tied the game in the second. Palase added a go-ahead RBI knock during a two-run fifth. Saint Michael's had two reach on errors in the sixth, but one was erased on a double play, and the other was stranded.

In game two, Lemnah went 3-for-3 while coming within a home run of the cycle, adding a walk, a run and an RBI. First-year Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) added a pinch-hit single, and Falls walked twice while scoring. Frank added two more sacrifices, and junior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) took the loss after working the first four innings.

Senior Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) was 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBIs and a home run for New Haven, while Spivey finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and also went deep. First-year Nicole King (Front Royal, Pa./Warren County) allowed one earned run during a complete-game effort, striking out seven.

Single Charger runs in the opening two frames were met by two Purple Knight runs in the third, with both scoring on a two-out error, before a sac fly put New Haven on top for good in the third. Gelardi's two-run homer in the fourth produced a 5-2 score, and Spivey added a solo shot in the fifth before two more runs came home in the sixth. Barcavage led off the seventh with a single, and Lemnah's triple scored junior pinch-runner Grace Bonaiuto (Beverly, Mass./Austin Preparatory School) before the final two batters were retired.

Saint Michael's is slated to open both its home schedule and NE-10 Northeast Division slate on Wednesday by taking on Saint Anselm College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
