SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis squad fell in a 5-4 decision at American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference match between two teams vying for the sixth and final league playoff spot on Sunday at Central High School. The Purple Knights drop to 3-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference play with the loss, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-3 and 3-3.
In doubles play, senior Kenny Vassallo (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) and first-year Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) notched an 8-1 win over their opponents for the Purple Knights' only doubles victory of the day.
After dropping the opening set at No. 4 singles, senior Chris Moskal (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) battled back to win a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 decision, claiming his third singles win of the campaign. Classmate Lyle Nichols (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the fifth position, also winning his third, and Vassallo won 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth slot for Saint Michael's.
The Purple Knights close out their regular season next Sunday with a home match against Franklin Pierce University at 2 p.m.
