Softball suffers pair of setbacks in Florida during day two of Spring Break trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost a pair of contests on Sunday during the National Training Center Spring Games against Minot (N.D.) State University, 14-1 in five innings, and versus Minnesota State University Moorhead, 4-0. After four games, the Purple Knights seek their first victory.

Against 9-5 Minot State, which was a 2013 NCAA Central Region 1 Tournament semifinalist, sophomore Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and classmate Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) added a knock. Senior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) scored, and classmate Lea Gipson (Bridport, Vt./Middlebury Union) took the loss in her first start since 2011, allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings.

Senior Jen Dixon (Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) fired three no-hit, shutout innings for the Beavers while hitting a home run in her only at bat, otherwise walking three times, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Junior Melissa Bell (Belgrade, Mont./Belgrade) also homered, and classmate Ali Cygan (Bozeman, Mont./Belgrade) was 4-for-4.

Minot State scored three runs in the top of the first inning, with Dixon's two-run home run accounting for the first runs of the ballgame, as the Beavers led 14-0 by the fourth. DelGreco singled home Falls with an unearned run in the home half of the fourth to get Saint Michael's on the board.

Senior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base against Minnesota State Moorhead, increasing her career hit total to 82 and passing Lindsay Bernard '10 to take over 15th in school annals. DelGreco doubled, senior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) added a hit, and Barcavage walked. First-year Rachel Tshonas (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) yielded three earned runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.

Junior Mollie Annen (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a home run for the 2-2 Dragons, while sophomore Morgan Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) tossed the four-hit shutout. She struck out 10.

Annen scored with one out in the bottom of the first inning to give her team an early lead, and Barcavage walked to lead off the top of the second but was stranded. Another Dragon run scored with the aid of an error and a passed ball in the second, and Lemnah was left in scoring position in the third after singling and swiping second. DelGreco doubled with two out in a scoreless fourth, and the Purple Knights left runners at the corners in the fifth. Annen's two-run homer in the home half gave Minnesota State Moorhead a pair of insurance runs.

Saint Michael's faces the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) tomorrow at 1 p.m. and New York Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
