ORLANDO, Fla. - During its third Spring Break match of the week, the Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell to Hobart (N.Y.) College, 9-0, on Wednesday at the Lake Cane Tennis Center. The Purple Knights remain winless through 10 matches, while the Statesmen are 6-3.
Senior Chris Allen (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and first-year Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) came the closest to corralling a point for the Purple and Gold, coming up shy by an 8-6 count at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) nearly forced a third set during his singles match at No. 4 but fell in a second-set tie-breaker to lose by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) count. First-year Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) took five points from his opponent in the sixth spot, and sophomore Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) claimed four points at No. 5.
Saint Michael's completes its Spring Break trip tomorrow against regionally-ranked Hamilton (N.Y.) College at 11:30 a.m. Hamilton is 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Division III Northeast Region poll.
