Softball stays close with No. 17 Caldwell, drops final two on Florida trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team wrapped up its Spring Break slate with a narrow 4-0 loss to No. 17 Caldwell (N.J.) College on Thursday during the National Training Center Spring Games before dropping a 14-1, five-inning affair with 2013 NCAA World Series qualifier Kutztown (Pa.) University. The Purple Knights are 0-8.

Against 10-1 Caldwell, which is ranked by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and was a 2013 NCAA East Region 2 Tournament finalist, the Purple and Gold kept the Cougars scoreless until the fifth inning. Senior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) and sophomores Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and Jenna Maksian (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) all had hits, and senior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) took the loss after yielding three runs - two earned - on just three hits in 4.1 innings. Classmate Lea Gipson (Bridport, Vt./Middlebury Union) allowed the final run on three hits while recording the final five outs.

Caldwell scored three runs in the fifth inning to snap the scoreless deadlock before plating an insurance run in the sixth, as Saint Michael's never put more than one runner on base in any inning.

Sophomore Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) ripped an RBI double against 6-11 Kutztown, while Barcavage added a single. First-year Jane Erlandson (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) took the loss.

After Kutztown scored twice in the top of the first inning, Lemnah led off the home half with a walk before coming around on DelGreco's two-out double. Saint Michael's threatened to tie during the following frame, as sophomore Katy DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was hit by a pitch with two down before first-year Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) drew a walk, but the two were left stranded. The Golden Bears pulled away with one run in the third, nine in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Saint Michael's begins its Northeast-10 Conference schedule at Adelphi University on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The Panthers were a 2013 NCAA East Super Region finalist.
