WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team concluded its 2013-14 season with a 7-2 loss to Assumption College on Thursday during Northeast-10 Conference action at the Assumption Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights finished the year 2-13 overall and 2-8 in the league, while the Greyhounds are 9-7 and 5-5.
Saint Michael's lost all three doubles matches, with senior Chris Allen (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and first-year Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) coming closest to victory, claiming four games in the second position.
Sophomore Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) notched a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles, while first-year Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory at No. 6 to complete his rookie season 3-0 during NE-10 singles play. Sophomore Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) nearly corralled a third victory but fell by a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 count in the fifth position. Junior Billy Wood (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled) dropped his opening set just 6-4 during a straight-set loss at No. 2.
