COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) became the 11th player in Saint Michael's College softball history to reach 100 career hits as the Purple Knights lost a pair of three-run decisions to Assumption College, 3-0 and 6-3, on Friday during Northeast-10 Conference play at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights are now 1-23 overall, 1-15 in the league and 0-10 in the Northeast Division. The Greyhounds are 13-17, 7-10 and 6-9.
In the opener for Saint Michael's, which was continuing a run of 14 games in 11 days, senior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was 2-for-3 while first-year Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) finished 1-for-2. Senior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) yielded three runs on six hits in seven innings.
First-year Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) was 2-for-3 for Assumption, while junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./La Salle Academy) had a double, scored and added an RBI. Senior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) spun a three-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking no one.
Junior Andrea Crowley's (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) one-out RBI single in the second inning put the Greyhounds ahead for good, and Impagliazzo doubled home a run in the third before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Saint Michael's threatened in the fifth, as Falls and Barbato knocked consecutive one-out singles, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout accounted for the final two outs, as Lattal set down the final eight batters of the game.
In the nightcap, Lemnah reached her milestone while also scoring and stealing a base. As the 11th Purple Knight to reach the 100-hit plateau, she became the seventh Vermont native and third Lyndon Institute graduate, joining Meagan Newland '06 and Katy Newland '08. Falls again was 2-for-3, scoring while doubling, first-year Jessica Carroll (Concord, N.H./Concord) drove in two runs, and junior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) doubled. Senior Lea Gipson (Bridport, Vt./Middlebury Union) yielded four earned runs during a complete-game loss.
Impagliazzo went 2-for-3 with a run, three RBIs and a triple for the visitors, and Abad was 2-for-2 with two runs and two sacrifices. First-year Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) picked up the win in relief, allowing three hits during 4.2 shutout innings.
Impagliazzo's two-out RBI single plated Abad in the first inning before Gipson escaped a bases-loaded jam unscathed, and Carroll came through with a two-run single with one out in the second to give the Purple Knights a 2-1 edge. After Impagliazzo tripled in one run and scored on another sac fly in the third, Lemnah reached 100 hits with a single down the left field line with one out in the home half, stole second and came around on an infield error to tie the game.
The Greyhounds plated three runs in the sixth to snap the deadlock, as senior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) knocked a two-run double before scoring on Impagliazzo's sac fly. Saint Michael's, which stranded Murray in the fourth and Falls in the sixth after each had doubled, saw junior Sara St. Don (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) pick up a pinch-hit single with one out in the seventh to attempt to begin a rally, but a fielder's choice and a lineout were the final two outs of the contest.
The Purple Knights conclude a three-game series with Assumption tomorrow at 11 a.m. The contest will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony.
