MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team played for the second straight day on Wednesday, falling to regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 9-0, during Northeast-10 Conference action at the SNHU Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights are 1-12 overall and 1-7 in the league, while the Penmen, who are seventh in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll, improved to 14-3 and 6-1.
Saint Michael's nearly took a doubles decision from Southern New Hampshire, which qualified for the past three NCAA Tournaments, but trailed 3-0 heading into singles. In the third position, sophomore Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and first-year Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) fell by a narrow 8-6 count.
Laves also put forth a strong result at No. 5 singles, coming up shy 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Sophomore Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, staying close with an opponent who is 5-2 in NE-10 singles, while Lambert won three games in his opening set during a loss in the sixth slot. At No. 1, senior Nick Bosco (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) turned in a 6-2, 6-3 loss against the ninth-ranked player in the region.
The Purple Knights head to Assumption College next Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
