WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team finished its season on Sunday with three losses at Bentley University, with two coming in the Falcons' final at bat, at Bentley Field. The Purple Knights lost the completion of a Saturday game, 10-0 in five innings, after the contest had been suspended following one pitch the previous day. During the regularly-scheduled games, the visitors lost just 1-0 and 5-2, ending the year 1-34 overall, 1-26 in the Northeast-10 Conference and 0-21 in the Northeast Division. Bentley is 20-17, 14-13 and 12-9.
Senior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) finished her career with 112 hits, tied for eighth in program history with Meagan Newland '06, while classmate Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt../Essex) ended up just three hits shy of the 100-hit club, with 97. She tied Newland for seventh with 20 doubles.
In game one, sophomore Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) doubled while Falls, Lemnah and first-year Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) all added hits. Classmate Rachel Tshonas (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) allowed eight earned runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss.
Senior Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) tripled and drove in four runs for Bentley, and first-year Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) was 2-for-4 with two runs. Graduate student Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) fired a four-hit shutout.
Sophomore Alex Borrelli's (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) two-run double keyed Bentley's four-run first inning, as the final three runs scored with two down. Saint Michael's threatened the following inning, as Barcavage doubled and Falls singled to begin the frame, but Taitz fanned the next batter before inducing a pair of groundouts. Gauthier's three-run triple highlighted a six-run third.
Senior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) put together possibly the finest performance of her career for the Purple Knights in game two, allowing no earned runs on just two hits in 6.1 innings before being charged with the hard-luck loss. Five players had one hit, including Barnett, who also stole a base.
Junior Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) went 2-for-3 while scoring the winning run for the hosts, Borrelli posted the winning RBI, and sophomore Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) fired 1.1 perfect innings of relief to take the victory.
The teams' best scoring opportunities came in the late stages. Barcavage led off the fifth with a single before Barnett singled with two down to put runners at the corners and ultimately stole second, but the final batter popped up. McCormack worked around an error and a walk in the home half, and Falls and sophomore Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) were left on base after singling in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Connor led off with a single, moved to third on a failed pick-off throw, and scored two batters later on Borrelli's sacrifice fly.
Senior Lea Gipson (Bridport, Vt./Middlebury Union) shut the Falcons out until the sixth inning in game three, as she ended up allowing all five runs, but only one earned, on five hits in six innings. First-year Jessica Carroll (Concord, N.H./Concord) ripped a two-run double, while Lemnah singled and walked.
Connor drove in two runs while scoring once, and Gauthier doubled, scored and walked. Ferris allowed two runs on five hits during a complete game.
Gipson worked around Gauthier's one-out double in the first and a leadoff walk in the third before Saint Michael's saw Lemnah lead off the fourth with a walk and Falls single with one out, but a double play ended the threat. Bentley broke the scoreless deadlock with five runs in the sixth, with only Gauthier's run earned. Connor knocked a two-run single during the frame. The Purple Knights got on the board when Carroll ripped a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit double in the seventh.
