Box Score RINDGE, N.H. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 90-56, during Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday evening in the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse. The Purple Knights, who were eighth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Media Poll, fell to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the league, while the Ravens are 9-5 and 4-3.
Seniors James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) and Corey Crawford II (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) both had double-doubles for Saint Michael's, with Crawford collecting 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while going 6-of-6 on free throws. Cambronne posted 11 points and 10 boards. Classmate Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) scored nine points to improve his career total to 1,506, becoming the first Purple Knight since Mark Pater '01 in 2000-01 to reach the 1,500-point plateau, and just the 12th all time. Sophomore Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) neared a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, six of which were offensive.
Senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa./Hamden South) led Franklin Pierce's 17-of-36 three-point shooting charge by going 8-of-15 from deep en route to 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Junior Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) shot 5-of-8 from the three-point stripe for 21 points, sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn./The Master's School) added 15 points, and senior Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass./Roxbury CC) totaled 10 points and nine assists.
Each of the Ravens' first four baskets was a three-pointer, including Vilmont hitting three of them in an early 2:37 stretch, and a Gittens dunk made it 14-5 by the 16:06 mark of the opening half. Cambronne responded with a lay-up and two free throws to inch the Purple Knights within five, but Vilmont hit two more threes 26 seconds apart to push his team's lead into double figures. Crawford's jumper again created a single-digit margin, at 20-11 with 13:44 remaining, and Bonds dropped home a lay-up at 10:56 to keep Saint Michael's within 25-14. Franklin Pierce countered with a 24-6 run, shooting 6-of-7 from beyond the arc, with Vilmont knocking down the final two 21 seconds apart. The visitors put the next seven points on the board, with four coming from Bonds, before the Ravens carried a 55-29 advantage into the locker room. The hosts shot 13-of-21 from three-point range in the half while allowing the Purple Knights to make only one trey.
On the strength of five points by Cambronne, Saint Michael's put together an early 7-2 run in the second stanza to come as close as 59-36, on Bonds' put-back at 15:10. After Vilmont responded with a three-pointer, the Purple Knights never again trailed by fewer than 24 points. An individual 6-2 spurt by Holton produced a 25-point deficit at 9:47, and Crawford hit two freebies to bring the visitors within 24 at 7:07, but Franklin Pierce scored 10 of the next 12 points.
The Purple Knights head to nationally-regarded Le Moyne College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest. In addition to receiving votes toward this week's D2SIDA National Media Poll, the Dolphins are second in the D2SIDA East Region Media Poll.
