Piper reaches 100-point plateau, women's lacrosse downs Southern New Hampshire, 12-10

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) notched six points to become the 15th Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse player to ever reach the 100-point plateau, and the Purple Knights held off Southern New Hampshire University, 12-10, on Tuesday during Northeast-10 Conference play at Duffy Field. Now 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the league, Saint Michael's downed the Penmen for the first time since 2005 while playing just its second home game of the season. Southern New Hampshire slipped to 2-5 and 1-5.

Piper matched her career high with five goals while totaling six points, coming within one of her personal best in that category, as well. She now has 101 points for her career. Junior Steph Bonewald (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) scored twice while adding four draw controls and three ground balls, first-year Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) had two goals, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, while senior Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) tallied twice. Sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) tacked on one goal and three draw controls, while junior Maggie Dougherty (Verona, N.J./Verona) dished off three assists.

Senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) recorded four ground balls and three draw controls, becoming the third Purple Knight to record 100 draw controls for a career. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) stopped six shots in 54:29 while earning the victory, and junior Casey Curtin (Waltham, Mass./Ursuline Academy) appeared for 5:31 during a mid-game relief stint.

Junior Alexa Allen (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) paced the Penmen with a hat trick and an assist, while sophomore Ellen Decker (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and first-year Kennedy Daziel (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) both scored twice with an assist. Sophomore Nicole Kennedy (Windham, Maine/Windham) recorded five saves.

Piper and Bonewald scored 1:06 apart to make it 2-0 at 26:19 of the opening half before Boyer scored twice more by 19:12. Dougherty then fed Moyna for a marker at 13:59 before MacKinnon scored on a free-position attempt 50 seconds later, and the hosts led 6-0. Southern New Hampshire surged back with five consecutive goals, as Decker scored twice in the final 9:11 of the opening half prior to Allen's goal at 3:52 off a Decker feed. Daziel and senior Emily King (Florence, Mass./Northampton) tallied 12 seconds apart to produce a 6-5 margin by 28:18 of the second stanza.

Those goals kicked off a flurry of five tallies in a 1:35 span, as Bonewald and Moyna found the back of the net 29 seconds apart to reestablish a three-goal cushion by 27:22, but Allen made it 8-6 with 26:55 to go. Two ensuing Piper goals were sandwiched around another Penmen marker, and Saint Michael's held a 10-7 advantage by 20:42, but Daziel and Allen registered goals within a 47-second span to once again produce a one-goal difference at 17:52.

Piper's milestone goal 1:16 later was later countered by a visitor goal with 14:25 remaining, but Piper added insurance with 8:29 left. Gunning made one final stop with 1:07 remaining, and the hosts cleared their zone before salting away the clock before the final buzzer.

The Purple Knights host Franklin Pierce University on Friday at 3 p.m.
