Women's volleyball opens NE-10 play with loss at Southern New Hampshire

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team had a five-match winning streak snapped in falling at Southern New Hampshire University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-16), on Saturday during both teams' Northeast-10 Conference opener in SNHU Fieldhouse. The Purple Knights, who were riding their longest string of victories since 2011, slipped to 5-2, while the Penmen moved to 6-5.

Sophomore Megan Priester (Dover, N.H./Dover) notched seven kills while swinging at a .368 clip for the visitors, while seniors Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and Candace Washington (New Carrollton, Md./Parkdale) both had six kills. Flaherty added nine digs, while Washington totaled three blocks. Sophomore McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) collected five kills, and junior Catie Weller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) accumulated 24 assists, seven digs and two blocks. Classmate Megan Mulvaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) tacked on four kills.

Junior Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded 11 digs, pushing her career total to 1,061 and passing Stephanie Robbins '05 (1,060) for third in program history. Sophomore Julia Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville) contributed nine digs.

Sophomore Marisa Coronis led the Penmen with 13 kills, first-year Holly Adams had 12 kills and 11 digs, and senior Catherine Cotton posted 39 assists. Classmate Maeghan Higgins had a match-best 16 digs.

After six early ties in the opening set, neither squad led by more than three points until Southern New Hampshire rattled off three straight to take a 19-15 edge, but a Flaherty kill trimmed a later deficit to 20-19. However, the hosts scored five of the final six points to pull away. The Penmen led 5-1 in set No. 2 before Flaherty's ace forged the first of two straight ties, at 12 apiece, but Southern New Hampshire used a 12-2 run to end the set. Priester's kill put Saint Michael's up by an 8-5 count in the third set before the hosts later scored seven of eight points to nab a 15-12 edge for the final lead change.

The Purple Knights return home on Wednesday to take on Middlebury College at 7 p.m.
