GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - In its final match until next month, the Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell to regionally-ranked Adelphi University, 9-0, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play at the Adelphi Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, while the Panthers, who are seventh in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll and qualified for the last two NCAA Tournaments, improved to 3-4 and 3-0.
The visitors won three games during doubles action, with junior Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) and first-year Adam Lockwood (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) combining to take two of them in the third position. Each of the six Purple Knights lost in straight sets during singles, with senior Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) the closest to taking a set during a 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 2. Classmate Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and junior Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) both won four games, competing in the No. 3 and 1 positions, respectively, with Lambert facing the ninth-ranked player in the region.
The Purple Knights return to action on April 2 at Stonehill College at 1 p.m., beginning a run of seven matches in 16 days.
