COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team completed a three-match homestand with a 6-3 loss to Le Moyne College on Sunday in the Tarrant Recreation Center. The Purple Knights, who lost four close results, slipped to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins are 6-8 and 4-4.
Saint Michael's lost all three doubles matches, but a pair of duos narrowly came up short. Juniors Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) and Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) lost an 8-6 decision in the top spot, and senior Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and first-year Dan Foley (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) fell by an 8-5 count at No. 2.
The Purple Knights split the six singles matches, with two setbacks nearly swinging in their favor. Steward picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win in the fourth spot, while Foley and Laves both captured their second set in a tie-breaker before finishing their match by winning a super tie-breaker. Laves earned a 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-8 victory at No. 3, and Foley was triumphant by a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5 result at No. 5. In the second spot, senior Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and junior Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) dropped a pair of 6-4 sets at No. 6.
The Purple Knights play three of their final four regular-season matches on the road, beginning Tuesday at Assumption College at 3:30 p.m.
