COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team fell to regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 9-0, on Sunday during Senior Day at the SMC Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights are now 1-10 overall and 1-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the first-place Penmen improved to 11-7 and 9-0. Southern New Hampshire is ranked 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.
The Saint Michael's tandems of juniors Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford)/Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) and sophomore Alex Mohbat (Beirut, Lebanon/Sagesse)/first-year Dan Foley (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) each won one game No. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively. Mohbat made his college tennis debut.
In their final home match, seniors Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) sided for the first time this year but for the 14th time in their careers, being shut out in the second position by the region's eighth-ranked doubles duo. They were also honored during a ceremony prior to the match.
Junior Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) had the Purple Knights' best result on the day, losing 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in the sixth singles spot. The Penmen's singled lineup included three of the top 15 players in the East Region. Lambert and Merry won four games apiece from the 10th- and 12th-ranked players at No. 1 and 2, respectively, while Laves claimed three games in the third spot from the 15th-ranked player. Foley won four games at No. 5.
The Purple Knights close out their season next Saturday at Franklin Pierce University at 1 p.m.
