RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team finished its 2016 season with an 8-1 loss at Franklin Pierce University on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights ended the year at 1-11 overall and 1-9 in the league, while the Ravens are 6-15 and 3-7.
Each of the three Purple and Gold doubles teams fell by 8-3 counts. Juniors Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) and Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) sided at No. 1, senior Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and first-year Dan Foley (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) teamed in the second spot, and senior Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) and junior Forrest Owen (Northboro, Mass./Saint John's) combined at No. 3.
Foley picked up the Purple Knights' point during the day with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in the sixth singles position, while junior Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) was on the losing end of a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 decision at No. 5. The two Saint Michael's seniors both closed out their careers with narrow setbacks, with Laves falling 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the third slot and Merry downed by a 6-4, 7-5 count at No. 2. Steward lost his first set 6-4 during a straight-set loss at No. 4.
