COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by knocking off American International College, 7-2, on Thursday during Northeast-10 Conference play in the Tarrant Recreation Center. The Purple Knights are 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the league after earning Ryan Magee '11 the first victory of his college head coaching career, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 0-6 and 0-6.
Saint Michael's took two of the three doubles matches to forge ahead for good. Senior Sam Laves (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) and first-year Dan Foley (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) notched an 8-5 victory in the second spot, while senior Charlie Merry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) and junior Forrest Owen (Northboro, Mass./Saint John's) blanked their opponents in the No. 3 position. Both tandems nabbed their third victory of the season.
Four Purple Knights picked up quick straight-set wins in singles play, with juniors Hayden Steward (Hamilton, Mass./Pingree School) and Patrick Dietz (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) and Foley each dropping just one game in victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Dietz's win clinched the match for Saint Michael's, while Foley recorded his first career singles victory. Laves claimed a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in the third position, and Merry fought through a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win at No. 2. Junior Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) nearly forced a third set in a 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) loss at No. 1.
The Purple Knights, who played for the second time in as many days, finish up a three-match homestand on Sunday by taking on Le Moyne College at 12 p.m.
