Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) banked home the winning free throw with 0.4 seconds left in overtime to cap the second late comeback for the Saint Michael's College men's basketball team in a 62-61 victory at Pace University on Tuesday evening in the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Purple Knights, who have split their last four games, are 3-12 overall and 2-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference while winning their fourth straight against the Setters, who slipped to 5-12 and 2-7.
Bonds registered 25 points, 15 rebounds, eight steals, four offensive rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 43 minutes, shooting 11-of-17 from the floor. Senior David Sullivan (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) added nine points, five rebounds and two assists, while classmate Zaire Williams (Paterson, N.J./Newark Academy) and junior Colin Richey (Upton, Mass./Choate Rosemary Hall) both had eight points and two of the Purple Knights' five three-pointers. Bonds drained the other.
Bonds came within one steal of matching Chase Graves' '06 14-year-old school record. Bonds, who has 12 20-point games and 10 double-doubles this season, moved into 20th in program history with 1,293 points, passing Bob Toner '74 (1,282) and Monroe Blakes '92 (1,288). In addition to becoming the 20th Purple Knight with 500 field goals, he took over 12th in NE10 history with 962 rebounds, moving beyond Saint Anselm College's Darlington Okerulu (953 from 2002-06) and The College of Saint Rose's Dominykas Milka (961, 2010-14).
Senior Austin Mofunanya paced Pace with 19 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Peterson turned in 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. First-year Peyton Wejnert had 12 points and three blocks.
After allowing the first six points of overtime - four of which came on free throws - by the time 3:52 remained, the Purple Knights netted the final seven to complete their second late rally. Sullivan nailed one free throw at 3:21 before sophomore Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) crashed the boards on a missed second bid and was fouled, leading to his two freebies one second later.
Bonds came up with a steal at the other end, saving it to Williams while falling out of bounds, before running the floor, taking a pass in the paint and dishing to the right block for Sullivan, who laid in the bucket and a tying free throw at 2:59, just 22 seconds after the visitors had trailed by six. The teams combined for four missed shots and four turnovers heading into the final 10 seconds - they shot a combined 2-of-9 in overtime - before a Setter lined up for a winning long jumper attempt at two seconds, but Bonds rose to block the shot before being fouled while gathering the rebound beyond the perimeter. With 0.4 ticks showing, Bonds banked in the go-ahead free throw and missed the second, but Mofunanya's desperation full-court heave was off the mark at the horn.
The second half saw the Purple Knights trail by 12 with 8:27 remaining and nine with 2:39 left before Bonds and Williams went to work. Williams' jumper at 2:30 cut the deficit to 55-48, Bonds came up with a steal and a dunk on the next possession, and Sullivan's steal on the following Setter opportunity led to a Bonds lay-in with 1:47 to go, making it 55-52. The next possession ended in another Bonds steal, and Williams canned the tying triple at 1:18. Yet another Bonds takeaway at 55 ticks led to a missed shot by a teammate, but he registered his fourth steal in the final 2:05 of regulation by forcing a jump ball with 1.1 seconds left. A Purple Knight had a long look at a winning three hit the front of the rim at the buzzer.
The teams played through eight lead changes in the opening half, as neither led by more than four points, and Pace carried a 26-25 edge into the locker room. Bonds' three-pointer - the second of his career - 52 seconds into the second half knotted the game at 28, but three different Setters scored in a 7-0 response by 17:42. Pace slowly built its advantage to 12 on Mofunanya's lay-up with 8:27 to go, and Bonds wrapped two buckets around a pair of Richey free throws to halve the deficit at 4:08 before a quick 4-1 spurt put Pace in front 55-46 with 2:39 left.
Saint Michael's returns to action next Wednesday at regionally-ranked Le Moyne College at 5:30 p.m. The Dolphins are tied for fifth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Media poll.
