Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) recorded his 1,000th career rebound before making a handful of important plays in the final eight seconds, and the Saint Michael's College men's basketball team used a game-ending 21-7 run to upend the University of New Haven, 66-63, on Tuesday in Charger Gymnasium.

The Purple Knights improved to 4-14 overall and 3-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, having split its last four games while winning at New Haven for the first time since Jan. 19, 2011. The Chargers slipped to 11-8 and 6-7 after defeating 16th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in its last game. New Haven had its four-game winning streak snapped and was 8-2 at home, capturing its past five contests in Charger Gymnasium.

Bonds recorded 20 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and a career-high four blocks in 39 minutes en route to his 14th 20-point outing of the year and 13th double-double, including seventh straight. It was also the 40th double-double of his career. Sophomore Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) scored 19 points thanks to a 5-of-9 three-point effort, senior Zaire Williams (Paterson, N.J./Newark Academy) totaled nine points and four assists, and classmate David Sullivan (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) had eight points. He and Williams both went 4-for-4 on free throws.

First-year Stan Foster (Rochester, N.Y./Avon Old Farms School) recorded two of the visitors' seven rejections, while he and sophomore Derek Cheatom (Buffalo, N.Y./The Park School of Buffalo) both had five points, three boards and two helpers. The Purple Knights shot 12-of-14 on free throws to the Chargers' 6-of-12 performance, and connected on 42.1 percent (8-of-19) of their threes to the hosts' 27.8 percent (5-for-18) showing.

Bonds increased his career rebound total to 1,002, joining Hank Gretkowski '59 (1,116) and Ken Johnson '76 (1,347) as the only Purple Knights ever with 1,000 caroms, and becoming the first to reach the plateau since Johnson as a junior in 1974-75. With 1,354 points, he joins Johnson (1,733) as the lone Saint Michael's players ever with at least 1,100 points and 1,000 rebounds. Through 99 career games, Bonds is also sixth in program history in rebounding average (10.1), having collected 369 of his rebounds on the offensive end and 633 defensively.

Bonds moved into 10th in NE10 history in boards, edging past Mario Elie (1,001), a three-time NBA champion and current Orlando Magic assistant coach who played for American International College between 1981-82 and 1984-85. Bonds and Hugh Lindo (1,143) of Division III Eastern Connecticut State University are the only active players in NCAA men's basketball with four-digit rebound totals. During the contest, Holmes passed Nate Birr '11 (93) and Greg Thomas '90 (95) to move into 23rd in program history with 97 three-pointers.

First-year Roy Kane Jr. tallied a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four blocks for New Haven, sophomore Michael Bourke added 12 points, and junior Danny Upchurch collected 10 points and five assists.

Bourke buried a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 56-45 lead with 7:47 remaining, and Bonds' three-point play exactly two minutes later were the next points of the game and began the comeback. Holmes wrapped a pair of threes 1:15 apart around a pair of Bourke freebies to cut the hole to 58-54 before Upchurch's lay-in at 3:28 put the hosts up six. Bonds followed with a freebie, Cheatom grabbed a rebound before burying a triple with 2:19 left, and Sullivan hit the tying free throws at 1:50. Upchurch and Holmes exchanged lay-ups before Upchurch hit a go-ahead free throw at 57.9 seconds, making it 63-62.

The Purple Knights missed the front end of a one-and-one with a chance to lead at 45.9 seconds, but Bonds came up with a steal at 21 ticks, and Williams hit the tying and go-ahead freebies with 18.3 seconds left. At 8.1 seconds, Bonds rejected a go-ahead lay-up try out of bounds and, later in the possession, grabbed the rebound of another New Haven miss before being fouled. He canned a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to push the lead to three before Williams knocked the ensuing inbounds pass out of bounds. With the Chargers inbounding from in front of the far bench with 0.5 seconds left, Bonds disrupted a connection in the paint to conclude the game.

In a game that featured 15 lead changes, Kane twice provided the Chargers with their largest lead of the first half - four points - before a 7-2 spurt that spanned halftime put the Purple Knights up 37-32 on Holmes' triple 48 seconds into the second half. Bonds already had a double-double by the intermission, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Back-to-back Sullivan buckets extended the advantage to 41-34, but Bourke and Kane each had six points during an ensuing 22-4 run, with the Chargers scoring the final 12 points consecutively to lead 56-45 with 7:47 remaining. Bonds recorded his 1,000th rebound on an offensive board during a putback attempt at 6:45.

The Purple Knights head to American International College on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
