Men's basketball's winter concludes with NE10 road loss to Stonehill

Box Score

EASTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team concluded its season with a 94-81 loss at Stonehill College in Merkert Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The Purple Knights ended up at 5-21 overall and 4-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Skyhawks improved to 15-12 and 10-11.

Senior David Sullivan (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) turned in 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting in his final college game, adding six rebounds, while classmate Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) recorded his 19th double-double of the season with 16 points, 13 rebounds, four offensive boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Sophomore Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) totaled 12 points.

Sophomore Derek Cheatom (Buffalo, N.Y./The Park School of Buffalo) and first-year Thomas Jackson III (Middletown, Conn./Holderness School) both recorded nine points, with Cheatom lending two assists while Jackson dished off three helpers and shot 3-of-3 on three-pointers in his first college start. Senior Zaire Williams (Paterson, N.J./Newark Academy) handed out three assists during his final college appearance.

The Purple Knights committed only six turnovers while claiming advantages of 42-28 on points in the paint and 15-7 in second-chance points, but the Skyhawks held a 22-8 scoring edge on free throws.

First-year Daniel Largey led Stonehill with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting, senior Ryan Logan tacked on 18 points with five assists, and junior Isaiah Bess notched 13 points. Classmate KJ Lee recorded 10 points, 12 rebounds and five helpers, while junior Joel Berroa shot 5-of-5 for 12 points as a reserve.

By the time Holmes dropped home a lay-up with 8:55 left in the opening half to knot the score at 19, the teams had played to six ties, with neither leading by more than five points. Sophomore Michael Boen scored five points in an ensuing 11-0 run, giving Stonehill a 30-19 advantage at 6:15. Bonds posted consecutive buckets before Sullivan's three-point play chipped the deficit to four, but the hosts later extended the lead back out to 36-28.

Jackson buried a pair of treys in a 7-2 counter, leaving the Purple Knights trailing 38-35 with 34 seconds left, but junior Ryan Roach knocked down a jumper just before the buzzer, giving the hosts a five-point edge at the half. That kicked off a 12-2 run that carried into the second half, with Largey scoring the final six points.

With his team down 50-37, Bonds scored six straight points in 1:50 to create a seven-point game before countering Boen's lay-in with a free throw, and the visitors were behind 52-44 with 15:01 to go. Berroa knocked down a triple 12 seconds later, and Stonehill still led 84-73 with fewer than four minutes left. First-year Stan Foster (Rochester, N.Y./Avon Old Farms School) knocked down a long three at 3:37 before Bonds' lay-in 57 seconds later produced a six-point game, but a Purple Knight technical foul led to a four-point possession for Stonehill, and the visitors never again trailed by single digits.

Williams closed out his career with 226 assists, good for 22nd in program history, while his 101 helpers this season were the most by a Purple Knight since Nate Birr '11 handed out 166 in 2010-11. Holmes canned his 116th and 117th career threes, passing Eric Swiezynski '05 (116) to take over 18th in program annals heading into his junior year. Holmes' 66 threes this year tied him with Juddy McDonald '93 (1990-91) for 14th in school history.

During the game, Bonds became the second player in program history with 1,500 career points and 1,100 rebounds, joining Ken Johnson '76 in that exclusive club. Bonds finishes his career 13th at the College in scoring (1,523), third in rebounds (1,102), sixth in rebounding (10.3), 10th in field goals (596), 12th in free throws (329), 23rd in blocks (44) and tied for 26th in games (107). Among players who competed for four years, Bonds has the second-highest rebound average, and he is fifth in the history of the NE10 in career rebounds. His 46 double-doubles are the most by a Purple Knight since complete rebound totals became available in 1981-82 - Michel Bonebo '90 is next, with 27 - and Bonds' 408 offensive boards are the most since that category began being tracked in 1992-93.

Bonds' 564 points this season place him 10th in program history, with the second-highest figure since the late '80s and the fifth-best total since the late '60s. His 21.7 points per game left him 11th, just 0.3 points outside the top 10, with the highest average since Tom Hoey '79 had 24.1 in 1978-79. With 322 rebounds, Bonds replaced himself in 10th place, having grabbed 320 last season. Bonds joins 1965 Boston Celtics draft pick Rich Tarrant '65 as the only Purple Knights to have point and rebound totals in the same season currently among the program's top 10, with Tarrant turning the feat in 1964-65. Bonds' board figure is the best at the College since Johnson in 1975-76.

Bonds is also seventh in field goals (220) and 15th in free throws (123), with the third most since the late '70s. The 19 double-doubles he collected this year tie his mark from last year for the most by a Purple Knight since figures became available in 1981-82, and Bonds' 121 offensive rebounds were the most since that category began being tracked in 1992-93. In fact, he is the only player at the College with 100 in any season in that time, reaching the barrier each of the past three seasons. Bonds' 12.4 rebounds per game this season are good for 16th in program history, edging his 17th-place average of 12.3 from his junior campaign. During his final two seasons alone, Bonds recorded 985 points and 642 rebounds, averaging 18.9 and 12.3, respectively, in those 52 games.
