Men's Soccer Falls to No. 3 Adelphi During NE10 Road Contest

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team continued Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, leaving with a 5-0 loss against No. 3 Adelphi University at Motamed Field. Saint Michael's is now 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the NE10 and Adelphi stands 4-0-1 and 2-0. The Panthers won the NE10 Championship for the first time last year and have qualified for the past two NCAA Tournaments. Adelphi, whose national ranking is according to the United Soccer Coaches, is also ranked first in the East Region poll.

Sophomore Leland Gazo (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial/Bradley) picked up four saves in the first 68:45 with senior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) finishing off the game with two saves. The Purple Knights were only outshot 5-0 within the first half. Senior Andre De Giorgi picked up two goals for the Panthers while classmates Joseph Sanchez and Toni Soler added a goal each. Junior James Thristino also chipped in a tally with classmate Joseph Blasetti picking up the win in net as the first of two keepers.

Within the first stanza Soler sent a free kick to the back left of the net during the 12th minute to account for the Panthers' first goal of the game. During the 30th minute, graduate student Alex Varkatzas sent a ball ahead to Thristino, who fired a shot across to the bottom right to make it 2-0. In the second half, the Panthers sent three more shots to the back of the net within a 4:19 span, with the last two coming from De Giorgi by 64:15.

Sophomore Jacob von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) sent a shot just wide in the 75th minute for Saint Michael's while classmate Justin D'Orlando (Middleton, Mass./Bridgton Academy) held an opportunity to add a tally during the 80th minute, but came up shy as Blasetti grasped the save. Classmate Jake Bannon (Clifton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) held the final shot for the Purple Knights in the 88th minute, kicking it just high.

The Purple Knights host Saint Anselm College on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off.
