Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team fell to Saint Anselm College, 2-1, on Wednesday during Northeast-10 Conference play on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 1-3-1 overall and winless in three league contests, while the Hawks improved to 1-3-1 and 1-2. This marked the 17th time in the last 19 meetings the teams were separated by one goal or less.
Sophomore Jacob von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) netted his first goal of the season for the hosts, with senior Adrián Díaz (Santiago de Compostela, Spain/Vermont Academy) assisting. Sophomore Leland Gazo (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial/Bradley) made three saves in a game during which Saint Michael's held edges of 13-11 in shots and 6-2 on corner kicks.
Senior Jack Heintzelman and junior Keith Hill both scored for Saint Anselm, while classmate Jacob Rostkowski made three stops.
A little more than four minutes into the game, Gazo made his first stop, rushing off his line to deny a shot from charging junior Emmet O'Callaghan. On the corner kick that followed, O'Callaghan sent a cross to the head of senior Dan Kelly, who sent the ball back across the box for Hill, who headed home the first tally near the left post at 4:37. Just 1:30 later, Saint Michael's sophomore Andres Rivas (Caracas, Venezuela/Palmer Trinity School) nearly connected for the equalizer, but his bid to the upper right corner from 20 yards was rejected by a leaping Rostkowski.
During the 63rd minute, the Hawks added to their lead when Heintzelman knocked in a free kick from just outside the box. A little more than three minutes later, the hosts halved their deficit at 65:23, as Díaz's corner kick pass was tapped in by von Giebel, who crashed the close post. Heintzelman ran onto a pass in the 75th minute but had a bid stopped by a charging Gazo, and the Purple Knights sent three shots wide of the target during the final 12:45.
Sophomore Jake Bannon (Clifton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) headed senior Jackson Steele's (Swampscott, Mass./Cushing Academy) long cross-field pass into Rostkowski's arms from close range in the 89th minute, and sophomore Brady Channell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) pushed one final try over the crossbar from 25 yards out with 10 seconds left.
