GAME FACTS

  • The Purple Knights' season finale.
  • Bentley held a narrow 10-7 edge in hits.
  • Favicchio picked up his first college hit in his third plate appearance.
  • A newcomer to the team, Gomez finished the season with a school-record 17 times hit by a pitch. Stampler was fourth in program history in stolen bases (11), Giroux-Harvey tied for fifth in walks (23) and Kroeger tied for eighth in doubles (9). Gomez is already tied for sixth in program history in career hit-by-pitches and leads the NE10 with 0.46 per game.
  • Senior Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) tied Kevin Harutunian '06 for second in program history in season hits (47) while capping his senior among the top 10 in numerous other categories, including second in home runs (7) and walks (25), tied for sixth in runs (27), tied for seventh in slugging percentage (.583) and tied for eighth in RBIs (25). His slugging percentage tied for second in the program's NE10 era (1990-98, 2012-now), while his batting average (.356) and on-base percentage (.469) were both fourth.
  • With his season complete but other squads still playing, Allen currently stands among the top four in the NE10 in each slugging (3rd), OBP (3rd) and batting (4th).

Allen's slugging percentage narrowly trailed SMC Athletic Hall of Famer Sean Finnell's '94 figure of .494, which is the highest by a Purple Knight who appeared solely during the program's NE10 era.

THE ACTION

  • Junior Ryan Berardino's two-out RBI single made it 1-0 in the first inning before Troiani's RBI fielder's choice doubled the lead in the second.
  • The first 10 Purple Knights were retired in order before first-year Sebastian Oetterer (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) and Allen singled consecutively with one down in the fourth. However, Hodgson induced an inning-ending double play ball.
  • Moran and Giroux-Harvey singled in the fifth, but another double play quelled the threat.
  • A bases-loaded walk brought Pierce home with an unearned two-out run in the home half.
  • Troiani legged out a three-run, inside-the-park home run to center field to make it 6-0 in the sixth.
  • Moran scored on a wild pitch in the seventh before Birch plated Gomez with a sac fly. However, that started a stretch of eight of the final nine Purple Knights being retired.
  • Favicchio led off the ninth with a single past the diving shortstop for his initial collegiate knock.
