No. 7 Men's Tennis Falls in NE10 First Round to No. 2 Southern New Hampshire, 4-0

HOOKSETT, N.H. - The seventh-seeded Saint Michael's College men's tennis team's initial postseason foray in 11 years ended with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday during the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts. The Penmen were also ranked second in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

RECORDS

  • Saint Michael's (0-10), Southern New Hampshire (8-1)

MATCH FACTS

  • Saint Michael's made its first postseason appearance since playing an NE10 Championship quarterfinal on April 20, 2010, at Bentley University.
  • Each of the Purple Knights' matches this spring were against regionally-ranked squads.
  • Southern New Hampshire was ranked second in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

THE ACTION

  • Sophomores Connor Scott (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) and Tyler Whitney (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) tied for their second-highest win total of the season during a 6-3 loss at No. 2 doubles.
  • In the top spot, sophomores Jason Boucher (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and Josh Weiss (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) lost a 6-1 decision against graduate students Bas van Biezen and Willem van Biezen - the sixth-ranked duo in the ITA's latest regional poll last April - after losing by narrow 7-5 and 6-4 counts during the regular season.
  • At No. 3, junior Constantin Krogh (Oslo, Norway/Perbråten VGS) and sophomore Luke Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) led 5-2 in just their second match together before the Penmen clinched the doubles point, leaving the Purple Knight duo one game away from victory.
  • Southern New Hampshire reached the four wins it needed to secure the overall triumph when Whitney, Ramsay and sophomore Jack Gunning (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) fell at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Ramsay won a game during singles for the fifth straight match.
  • Boucher, who forced four set tiebreakers and four three-set matches this spring, trailed just 5-4 in his first set at No. 2 singles against Willem van Biezen, who was ranked first in last April's regional singles poll while earning ITA All-America and ITA East Region Senior Player of the Year laurels in 2020, before the contest was suspended when Southern New Hampshire reached its fourth win.
  • Scott was down 6-1, 4-2 at No. 3, while Weiss lost his opening set, 6-1, but led 2-0 in the second against Bas van Biezen, the second-ranked singles player in last April's most recent ITA East Region poll.
