Softball Swept by Le Moyne, 2-0 and 3-1, in NE10 Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost a pair of close decisions to Northeast-10 Conference counterpart Le Moyne College, 2-0 and 3-1, on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.

GAME FACTS

  • The teams met for the first time since April 9, 2017, and for the first time in Colchester since April 6, 2013.
  • Nine of the Purple Knights' losses this year have come by two runs or fewer.
  • Sophomore Marli Welter (Madison, N.J./Madison) swatted her fifth home run of the season, moving into a tie for eighth in program history with five others, including first-year Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany). It was the team's 22nd homer of the year, one short of the 15-year-old school mark.
  • Saint Michael's opened a run of eight games in four days.

THE ACTION

  • Connor led off the home half of the first inning with a double for the Purple Knights' lone hit until the seventh inning, as one of just two base runners in the opening six frames.
  • Cherry wriggled out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second with a strikeout and the final batter called out for contacting the ball outside the box.
  • Le Moyne scored twice on the same play the following inning. Dybacz's grounder was knocked down by Cherry, allowing Boudreau to score on a close play at the plate, but a pair of infield errors brought senior Cassidy Barrett around for the second run.
  • Cherry allowed only two hits from there, and Hiscock and Johns both singled in the seventh to twice bring the winning run to the plate. However, Bennett capped her outing with a pair of strikeouts to finish the win.

THE ACTION

  • Barrett tripled home Nicolaos in the top of the first inning before coming around on Dybacz's sac fly.
  • The Purple Knights put four runners on base in the home half, with Hiscock singling and three teammates walking, but no runs came across.
  • Welter led off the second with a long home run to right center. Senior Leigh Brandenburg (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Hiscock both singled and stole a bag later in the inning but were left in scoring position.
  • Center fielder Hiscock cut down her second runner at the plate during the twinbill in the third inning, as Le Moyne was unable to score in an inning during which it put three on base.
  • Welter walked with one down in the sixth, but Bennett came out of the bullpen to strike out the next two hitters, around senior pinch runner Courtney Norton (Georgetown, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) stealing second.
  • The Dolphins added a final run on Nicolaos' two-out RBI single in the seventh.
