Cavossa Breaks Season Hits Record, Baseball Splits Regionally-Ranked Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Sam Cavossa (East Falmouth, Mass./The Winchendon School) broke a school record for hits in a season to highlight the Saint Michael's College baseball team's 14-6 win over regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College on Friday at Doc Jacobs Field in the opener of a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader. The Purple Knights lost in the nightcap, 11-2, against a team ranked eighth in this week's NCAA East Region poll.

The Purple and Gold assured itself of an NE10 Championship first-round road game on Tuesday with the split. It will hold either the No. 5 or 6 seed and visit Saint Anselm or Adelphi University, with the remainder of the weekend's games determining the final seeding.

RECORDS
  • Saint Michael's (19-24, 17-17 NE10), Saint Anselm (22-20, 20-14 NE10)
DOUBLEHEADERS FACTS
  • Cavossa batted 8-for-10 in the doubleheader to push his hit total to 60 this year, breaking Matt Beaulieu's '10 school record (56), set in 2009.
  • Cavossa had five hits in the opener, becoming the eighth Purple Knight with at least that many in a contest, but the first to achieve the feat in an NE10 game. He also became just the third player in program annals with at least five hits at home, joining Ralph Wilkins, Class of 1921 on June 2, 1921, and Ken Casperson '53 on May 8, 1953. Casperson and Wilkins both banged out a school-record six hits.
  • Junior Richard Gilboy (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) walked twice during the doubleheader to tie Brian Rayder's '93 34-year-old program record for bases on balls in a season (28).
  • Junior Jack Pattison (Vernon, Vt./Vermont Academy) was hit by a pitch for the 17th time this season in the first contest, tying Lenin Gomez's '20 seven-year-old school record.
  • Graduate student Max Kolifrath (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) appeared in his school-record 145th career game in the second contest, while sophomore Griffin Dupuis (Rowley, Mass./Deerfield Academy) made his school-record 19th pitching appearance of the season in the opener.
