SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's ice hockey team (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) was defeated
by the College of the Holy Cross (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC East) by a
score of 6-0 in ECAC East hockey action Saturday afternoon at
Cairns Arena.
For the Crusaders, senior Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg,
Mass./Tabor Academy) had two goals and an assist, as
fellow classmates Sarah Wetherbee (Canton,
Mass./Canton) and Kate Remsberg (Arlington,
Mass./Arlington) each had a goal and an assist, while
Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Penn./Middlesex
School) turned aside 28 shots en route to the
victory.
For the Purple Knights, senior Annice Mason (Berlin,
Vt./U-32) had 17 saves, while freshmen Melanie
Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Kristen
Salierno (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars) had 13 and
five saves respectively as each goaltender played one period.
Holy Cross broke the scoreless tie 6:43 into the first period,
as Amy McGhee (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame HS) sent a
pass that connected with Melissa Flanagan (Manchester Ctr.,
Vt./Burr and Burten) right in front of the net, and the
junior was able to slip the puck past Mason for
the eventual game winner. At the 10:09 mark, the Crusaders went up
2-0 thanks to a goal by Bloxson and assists by
classmates Wetherbee and
Remsberg. That same combination struck again at
15:15 following a Purple Knights penalty.
Just under eight minutes into the second period,
Wetherbee skated in front of
Cullen and sent a backhander past the freshman
goaltender. Casey Harvell (Lexington,
Mass./Lexington) put the Crusaders up 5-0 just 27 seconds
later, off of assists from Sam Rush
(Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and Sam
Murphy (Canton, Mass./Canton) At 14:46,
Remsberg lit the lamp off of an assist from
Bloxson, to close out the game's scoring.
Saint Michael's returns to action Friday night when they travel
to Castleton State to face off against the Spartans at 7 p.m. Holy
Cross plays again Saturday in a home contest with New England
